Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at thebodysway@outlook.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Somatic Psychotherapy is a body-centred approach to healing that integrates talk therapy with an awareness of physical sensations and bodily responses. It recognises that our experiences, especially overwhelming events and chronic stress, are not just stored in our minds but also in our bodies. By tuning into these physical sensations, we can gently release stored tension and emotions, fostering a deeper sense of self-awareness and regulation. You may have heard of leading expert Bessel van der Kolk, whose influential book, The Body Keeps the Score, provides extensive evidence for the body's crucial role in healing.

While both involve dialogue, counselling/talk therapy primarily uses verbal processing to explore thoughts and emotions. Somatic Psychotherapy integrates this with a focus on the body's sensations, movements, and nervous system responses. It works "bottom-up," addressing physical patterns, while talk therapy often works "top-down." A blended approach often offers the most comprehensive healing.

You might find Somatic Therapy beneficial if you experience:

  • A persistent feeling of being easily overwhelmed by everyday situations.
  • A sense of constantly being 'on edge' or hyper-vigilant, even when there's no clear danger.
  • Difficulty connecting with others or feeling emotionally numb.
  • Chronic fatigue or unexplained physical tension that just won't go away.
  • You are often distracted, shut down or can’t turn off.

When your nervous system is dysregulated, it can feel like being stuck in an unhelpful survival mode. The Polyvagal Theory by Dr. Stephen Porges, and its practical applications by experts like Deb Dana, help us understand these natural, though often overwhelming, body responses.

  • Hyperarousal (Overwhelm/Fight-or-Flight): This might feel like constant anxiety, a racing heart, shallow breathing, muscle tension (especially in the jaw, neck, or shoulders), restlessness, irritability, or difficulty sleeping. Your mind might race, making it hard to focus or relax.
  • Hypoarousal (Shutdown/Freeze): This can manifest as numbness, fatigue, a feeling of disconnection from your body or emotions, brain fog, or a sense of being "stuck" or heavy. You might feel a lack of energy, motivation, or emotional flatness, sometimes resembling depression.

Yes, as a registered counsellor, I utilise various counselling strategies and counselling techniques to support your well-being. This includes modalities such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and Solution-Focused approaches, which I integrate with Somatic work for a holistic and comprehensive approach.

Your first session is an opportunity for us to get to know each other. We'll discuss what brings you to counselling, what you hope to achieve, and answer any questions you have. It's a gentle space to explore your concerns, and we'll collaboratively decide on the best approach moving forward, whether that involves Somatic Therapy, counselling, or a blended approach.

The duration varies greatly depending on your individual needs and goals. Some clients find resolution in a few sessions, while others prefer ongoing support for deeper work or long-term personal growth. We'll discuss this together and regularly review your progress to ensure the process aligns with what you need.

Rebates for Counselling and psychotherapy services are not available through Medicare or private health funds. My fees are set affordably, aiming to charge less than the average gap cover to see a Psychologist to ensure mental health support is accessible to all who need it.
